My name is Helen Evans and I am the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator (SENDCo) and Deputy Headteacher here at Winkfield St Mary’s. I am responsible for the day-to-day running of our SEND provision, co-ordinating additional support for pupils, and working closely with parents, teachers, and external professionals.

At Winkfield St Mary’s, we are committed to meeting the individual needs of every pupil. Our teachers are skilled at planning for a wide range of abilities and adapting lessons to make learning accessible for all. We use a Quality First Teaching (QFT) approach, which means high-quality, inclusive teaching strategies are embedded in every classroom. This includes differentiated learning, personalised support where needed, and ongoing assessment to help every child reach their full potential – personally, socially, and academically.

If a child requires additional support beyond QFT, we will introduce targeted interventions. Where ongoing support is needed, we will put a Individualised Education Plan (IEP) in place which will contain specific targets which we will work on to support your child's learning. At this stage children will be placed on our SEND register. Parents are invited to meet with their child’s class teacher at the end of each term to review progress, set new targets, and discuss how home and school can continue to work together. During these meetings, you will be given a copy of your child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). These meetings replace parents’ evenings, as they provide more time to focus on your child’s specific needs.

For children with more complex needs, we may work with families and external agencies to apply for an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). This is a more formal level of support, and we will guide you through the process, working in partnership. If at any point a child no longer requires targeted or specialist interventions, they will be removed from the SEND register.

Throughout, we strongly believe in working in partnership with parents and carers, keeping your child’s needs at the heart of everything we do. If you have any concerns about your child’s progress, please speak first with their class teacher. I am also available most mornings at the school gate, or you can contact me via the school office at: secretary@wsmschool.org
